DEADLINE FOR HOME OWNERS EXEMPTION OCTOBER 2nD
If you are a home owner and just purchased your house, you have until OCTOBER 2nd to file with the City & County of Honolulu Real Property Assessment Division for your Home Exemption. The intent of the exemption is to "reduce the net taxable assessed value of the property used in determining the property tax"
You must be the home owner and occupy the home as your primary residence and the ownership of the home must be recorded at the Bureau of Conveyances.
Beginning tax year 2024-2025, the home exemption will be $120,000 for homeowners under the age of 65 as well as for homeowners who do not have their birthdate on file. This means that $120,000 is deducted from the assessed value of the property and the homeowner is taxed on the balance. For homeowners 65 years and older the home exemption is $160,000. To qualify for this exemption amount, you must be 65 years or older on or before June 30 preceding the tax year for which the exemption is claimed.
If you are unsure if you have a home owners exemption, you can check with the Real Property Assessment Division https://www.realpropertyhonolulu.com/
